The idea behind the "home owning democracy" was to shift the responsibility of money creation away from government and onto the public. Mortgages are the primary conduit and account for 60% of new money creation.

Dear Martin,

Good article on Iran, "friends like this". The best part was the critical view of Chavez support of Iranian regime. We may translate it in Urdu and print in our weekly paper Workers Struggle published from Lahore.
Anyhow, I am forwarding it to editors.

good analysis. another good article:
http://www.socialistproject.ca/bullet/bullet227.html

"these protests are not a call for foreign intervention. Nor are they a call for increased economic and political strangulation of the Iranian state and people."

This is precisely what worries me the most. If Gordon Brown considers his policy a success, with the economic boom having been built on a mountain of government, corporate and consumer debt, how on earth can he be trusted to do what is right. It is akin to allowing a drunken hooligan to drive the school bus.

I also want to know what it is he intends to do, because one thing is for certain, he is not very good at forecasting and I have no appetite to watch him lurch from one side to the other. We are in a mess, with a lunatic in charge, lets hope that somehow, we can get to our destination with enough semblance of order, to permit someone else to sort his legacy.

I recall when I worked in a really poor paying job in Swindon (that famous bakery that is now closed), I had an accident at work where I broke my thumb, the company made me take time off of work because they said they couldn't find an alternative job for me to do and I didn't get paid for the first 3 weeks (no back pay either). At the same time I needed dental treatment which cost £55.00, bur I never had that money, so I had to get an overdraft from the bank which cost even more, I then had to find a job while I was out of work to be able to pay for every day living as I wasn't entitled to benefits because I was working. The union AEU also did bugger all to help me, so I had when I returned to work, I also had to find a part time evening job to help pay all my bills. On top of all this I was in and out of hospital withother serious halth problems. So yes health care should be free and people who are ill shouldn't be forced into low paying jobs that don'tpay sick benefits, because this is another thing that this Labour government is forcing on the poorest of society.

Hi
I a have paid prescription charges all my life, despite needing regular hospital admissions and not being able to work. My sister however works as a midwife, but gets her prescriptions free, because she has one of the metabolic illnesses listed for exemption. Surely this can't be right!
